Freedom of Religion and Belief — supporting illustration
7.2.3

Freedom of religion and belief (vrijheid van godsdienst en levensovertuiging) is a fundamental right. You are free to have a religion, to choose a different religion, or to have no religion at all. A worldview (levensovertuiging) is a person’s way of looking at life and important values; it does not need to be religious. The government must allow room for these choices and cannot simply decide what someone must believe. This right is enshrined in Article 6 of the Dutch Constitution (Grondwet).

People can express their beliefs individually or together with others. Religious and philosophical organisations have the freedom to arrange many of their own affairs. The government does not interfere in their internal matters, as long as they obey the law. When a tradition or religious rule comes into conflict with the country's laws, state law always prevails. Determining the exact boundary in a concrete situation can sometimes be legally complex.

In a neighbourhood, at school or in a family, people may hold different beliefs. You do not have to adopt someone else’s conviction. However, you must respect their right to make their own choices. Conversations go better if you ask what someone means, rather than assuming all members of a group think the same way.

Sometimes belief, work, education, or safety affect each other. In these cases, find out which general rules apply and what arrangements may be possible. For real conflicts, seek reliable advice. Freedom of belief protects both people who practice a religion and people who choose to leave it.

Soms raken overtuiging, werk, onderwijs of veiligheid elkaar.
