Privacy safeguards your private life. Personal data are details that reveal something about you, such as your name, address, BSN (citizen service number) or information about your health. Organisations process such data for specific purposes. They are not allowed to collect or share data indefinitely. If you are asked to fill in a form, always ask which details are required, why they are needed, and what will be done with them.

The Algemene verordening gegevensbescherming (AVG, General Data Protection Regulation) gives people rights over their personal data. You can ask an organisation which personal data it holds about you and have an error corrected. Sometimes you can request deletion of your data; this is not always possible, for example when an organisation is legally required to store certain information. The rules depend on the situation, so read the organisation’s explanation or seek advice.

You can protect your data by being careful yourself. Never send a copy of your identity document via an unfamiliar link. Do not share your DigiD password or codes. Check that you are on the official website, and that any requested information is genuinely needed for the task. A trustworthy organisation can explain why they require something.

If you see an incorrect address in a file or receive a message that does not appear to be meant for you, contact the organisation using an official channel. Describe the error you have noticed and ask how it will be corrected. Keep your request and their response. Privacy is not just about confidentiality but also about having the right details and being able to control how your information is used.
