7.2.6

The law protects the integrity of your body: other people are not allowed to touch or harm your body without good reason. Bodily safety and protection of your own body are important rights. Violence is forbidden, even if it happens at home or is directed at a child. Unwanted sexual acts are not permitted. Citing family custom, tradition or honour does not make violence lawful. This applies to honour-related violence, violence in public and hitting children. Female genital mutilation is a criminal offence and can cause serious harm.

In an immediate emergency, call 112. If there is no acute danger but you are worried about domestic violence or child abuse, you can phone Veilig Thuis on 0800-2000. This number is free, available day and night, and you can ask for advice anonymously. A general practitioner (GP) or another trusted care provider can also help you explore safe ways forward.

People who experience violence may be afraid to talk about it. Choose a time and someone with whom you feel safe. You do not have to know straight away what help or process you want. Explain what is happening and ask what options exist. Someone listening to you should take your situation seriously and not put you at greater risk without your consent.

Even if you are worried about someone else, you are allowed to ask for advice. Explain what you have noticed and what you are unsure about. A help organisation can tell you how to act carefully. The general rules in a book are only a starting point; when danger or coercion is involved, getting personal help is more important than trying to work out all the steps alone.
