In the Donorregister, you record your decision about what should happen to your organs and tissues after you have died. This is a personal choice. You can give permission, refuse, exclude certain organs or tissues, or designate someone else to decide. You are allowed to change your preferences later on. Read through all the possibilities carefully before filling anything in.
For adults who do not enter a decision after the official letters, ‘no objection to donation’ is usually registered. This is not exactly the same as ticking ‘yes’ yourself, but donation may in that case still be possible. In the event of death, a doctor will discuss the registration with the family. This is why it helps if people close to you know what you want and why.
The choice concerns donation after death. A doctor will judge in each specific case whether donation is medically possible; registration does not guarantee that organs can always be used. The decision on treatment of a sick person is a different topic. If you are unsure or confuse these topics, ask a doctor or check the official website.
You can check and amend your choice at any time using the official Donorregister. Do not let anyone else decide for you if you do not want that. Saying ‘no’ is also a clear and valid choice. The purpose of the register is to ensure your preference is known when it matters later.

Je keuze in het Donorregister
In het Donorregister leg je vast wat je na je overlijden met je organen en weefsels wilt. Dat is een persoonlijke keuze. Je kunt toestemming geven, nee zeggen, bepaalde organen of weefsels uitsluiten of iemand anders laten beslissen. Je mag je keuze later veranderen. Lees de mogelijkheden rustig door voordat je iets invult.
Voor volwassenen die na de officiële brieven geen keuze invullen, wordt doorgaans ‘geen bezwaar tegen donatie’ geregistreerd. Dat is niet precies hetzelfde als zelf ‘ja’ invullen, maar donatie kan dan wel mogelijk zijn. Bij overlijden bespreekt een arts de registratie met de familie. Daarom helpt het als mensen dichtbij je weten wat jij wilt en waarom.
De keuze gaat over donatie na overlijden. Een arts beoordeelt in een concrete situatie of donatie medisch mogelijk is; een registratie betekent niet dat organen altijd gebruikt kunnen worden. Ook het besluit over behandeling van een zieke persoon is een ander onderwerp. Stel vragen aan een arts of kijk op de officiële website als je die onderwerpen door elkaar haalt.
Je kunt je eigen keuze controleren en aanpassen via het officiële Donorregister. Laat niemand anders voor jou beslissen als je dat niet wilt. Ook ‘nee’ is een duidelijke keuze. Het doel van het register is dat jouw wens bekend is wanneer die later belangrijk wordt.
