Self-determination of women — supporting illustration
7.2.8

Self-determination means that you make important choices about your own life and body. This also applies to women. A woman may choose for herself which education she follows, whether she works, and whom she wishes to have a relationship with. Family and friends may share their opinions, but they must not take over these decisions through threats or coercion.

Self-determination is connected to fundamental rights such as equal treatment and the protection of one's body. In everyday life, pressure can start subtly: a person may not be allowed to attend a class, must hand over her phone, or is constantly monitored. Even without visible physical violence, someone may experience little freedom as a result. Take such signals seriously and ask what the person wants.

Violence, threats and unwanted sexual acts are forbidden. Anyone who is under pressure can talk to a general practitioner (GP) or a trusted caregiver. If there are concerns about domestic violence, Veilig Thuis can be reached at 0800-2000, free of charge and available day and night; you may seek advice anonymously. If there is immediate danger, call 112. The safest step depends on the situation.

A conversation about self-determination requires respect. Do not ask why someone ‘just does not leave’, but listen to what she needs and what risks she sees. The right to choose for oneself also means that support workers seriously involve the person in what happens next.
