In the Netherlands there is freedom of education. This means, among other things, that there can be different types of schools. A public school is open to pupils from various backgrounds and is run under the responsibility of the government. A denominational school (bijzondere school) may have its own religious or educational philosophy. 'Bijzonder' here does not mean that the school provides special education for children with additional support needs.
Public and denominational schools both have to meet the legal requirements for education. However, the atmosphere, teaching methods and rules can differ. Therefore, read the school guide (schoolgids). In it, you can find out how the school operates, how it keeps parents informed and which rules are important. Also ask how the school organises extra support and deals with differences between pupils.
When choosing a school, do not only look at a name or type. Is the school accessible? Does the teaching style suit your child? How is contact with parents? A visit or conversation can help you understand this. Ask about the enrolment process and available places. An introductory meeting does not automatically mean your child has a place.
Mention at enrolment what your child needs and ask what the school can provide. Rules apply to admission and support, which can vary by situation. If a school cannot provide a suitable place, ask how it meets its responsibilities and what the next step could be. This way, you make your choice based on concrete information, not only what is written on a website.

Openbare en bijzondere scholen
In Nederland bestaat vrijheid van onderwijs. Dat betekent onder meer dat er verschillende soorten scholen kunnen zijn. Een openbare school staat open voor leerlingen met verschillende achtergronden en gaat uit van de verantwoordelijkheid van de overheid. Een bijzondere school kan een eigen levensbeschouwing of onderwijsvisie hebben. ‘Bijzonder’ betekent hier niet dat de school speciaal onderwijs geeft aan kinderen met extra ondersteuningsbehoeften.
Openbare en bijzondere scholen moeten allebei voldoen aan de wettelijke eisen voor onderwijs. Toch kunnen sfeer, lesmethode en afspraken verschillen. Lees daarom de schoolgids. Daarin staat hoe de school werkt, hoe zij ouders informeert en welke regels belangrijk zijn. Vraag ook hoe de school extra ondersteuning organiseert en hoe zij met verschillen tussen leerlingen omgaat.
Wie een school kiest, kijkt niet alleen naar een naam of richting. Is de school bereikbaar? Past de manier van lesgeven bij het kind? Hoe verloopt contact met ouders? Een bezoek of gesprek kan helpen om dit te begrijpen. Vraag naar het aanmeldproces en de beschikbare plaatsen. Een kennismakingsgesprek betekent nog niet automatisch dat je kind is toegelaten.
Vertel bij aanmelding wat je kind nodig heeft en vraag wat de school kan bieden. Voor toelating en ondersteuning gelden regels die per situatie kunnen verschillen. Als een school geen passende plek kan bieden, vraag hoe zij haar verantwoordelijkheid uitvoert en welke vervolgstap mogelijk is. Zo maak je een keuze op basis van concrete informatie in plaats van alleen de beschrijving op een website.
