Many children in the Netherlands start primary school at the age of four. However, compulsory education (leerplicht) begins precisely on the first day of the month after a child turns five. Compulsory education means that the child must attend school, and parents or guardians are responsible for making sure the child goes to school. If your child is ill, you must report their absence according to the school’s procedures. Taking an ordinary family holiday is not a valid reason for missing school.
Full compulsory education ends at the end of the school year in which the young person turns sixteen, or after they have attended school for at least twelve full years. After this, many young people who do not have a basic qualification (startkwalificatie) are required to continue attending school until their eighteenth birthday. A startkwalificatie is a diploma at havo, vwo, or mbo level 2 or higher. The qualification requirement (kwalificatieplicht) helps young people continue learning until they have such a diploma. Young people who have attended practical education (praktijkonderwijs) are exempt. The same applies after certain exit profiles from secondary special education (voortgezet speciaal onderwijs). Ask the school or the leerplichtambtenaar (compulsory education officer) to find out which rules apply to your child.
School holidays and days off are shown in the school calendar. Outside of these times, a child may not be absent without a valid reason. There are specific rules and a formal procedure for requesting special leave. Ask the school well in advance what is possible and who makes the decision. Do not book a trip until it is clear whether leave will be granted.
If your child is often late or misses lessons, discuss what is happening first. Sometimes there are problems with health, transport, or safety. The school and the municipality can help you think about solutions, but the legal duty remains important. Keep all messages about illness, leave, and arrangements. This way, everyone will know why a child was absent and what help was needed.
Try this
- Check the school’s timetable and holiday periods.
- Report illness following the school's rules.
- Before any special absence, ask about the leave procedure.
