There are various types of childcare in the Netherlands. Young children can attend a crèche (kinderdagverblijf) or other forms of care. Some children receive preschool and early years education, often called vve: activities with extra focus on development and language. This is not the same as regular primary school. Ask at the municipality or the consultatiebureau (well-baby clinic) about how a child may be eligible for this and which providers offer these activities.
For children already at school, there is after-school care, often called BSO (buitenschoolse opvang). This may be available before or after school hours, and sometimes during holidays. Check how the opening times fit with your work or studies and the school timetable. Ask how your child will get from school to the care provider and who is responsible for this transfer.
Places in childcare are not always immediately available. Therefore, start looking in good time, ask about waiting lists, and read the contract carefully. Check how many hours you are purchasing, the hourly cost, and how you can change or end the contract. A facility that seems nearby may not be suitable in practice because of opening times or transport.
Childcare usually costs money. For preschool education, the municipality can pay part of the costs; ask about the conditions and any co-payment (eigen bijdrage) in your municipality. For regular childcare and BSO, you may be entitled to childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag) from Dienst Toeslagen, under certain conditions. Before choosing a place, make a calculation using current figures to see how much you will pay yourself. If your income, childcare hours, or household situation changes, check whether you need to report this to Dienst Toeslagen. This helps prevent an advance payment being unexpectedly reclaimed later.

Voorschool en opvang na school
Kinderopvang is er in verschillende vormen. Jonge kinderen kunnen naar een kinderdagverblijf of andere opvang. Sommige kinderen krijgen voorschoolse en vroegschoolse educatie, vaak vve genoemd: activiteiten met extra aandacht voor ontwikkeling en taal. Dat is niet hetzelfde als de gewone basisschool. Vraag bij de gemeente of het consultatiebureau hoe een kind hiervoor in aanmerking komt en welke opvang de activiteiten aanbiedt.
Voor kinderen die al naar school gaan, bestaat buitenschoolse opvang, vaak BSO genoemd. Die kan vóór of na schooltijd en soms tijdens vakanties opvang bieden. Bekijk de openingstijden in verhouding tot je werk of opleiding en de tijden van de school. Vraag hoe het kind van school naar de opvang gaat en wie daarvoor verantwoordelijk is.
Opvangplaatsen zijn niet overal direct beschikbaar. Zoek daarom op tijd, vraag naar een wachtlijst en lees de overeenkomst. Controleer hoeveel uren je afneemt, wat een uur kost en hoe je het contract kunt veranderen of beëindigen. Een opvang die dichtbij lijkt, kan door openingstijden of vervoer toch niet goed passen.
Kinderopvang kost meestal geld. Voor voorschoolse educatie kan de gemeente een deel van de kosten betalen; vraag naar de voorwaarden en eventuele eigen bijdrage in jouw gemeente. Voor gewone opvang en BSO kun je onder voorwaarden kinderopvangtoeslag krijgen van Dienst Toeslagen. Maak vóór je een plaats kiest een berekening met actuele gegevens en kijk wat je zelf betaalt. Veranderen je inkomen, opvanguren of gezinssituatie, controleer dan of je de wijziging aan Dienst Toeslagen moet doorgeven. Zo voorkom je dat een voorschot later onverwacht wordt teruggevraagd.
