What are the costs of education?
School and study can have costs, but not every bill is compulsory. There may be costs for travel, certain materials, a course, or a voluntary parental contribution. Which costs apply depends on the type of school and age.
For many children, ordinary school books are paid for by the school. A school may request a voluntary parental contribution for extra activities. A child cannot be excluded from these activities if parents do not pay this contribution.
Ask the school for a clear overview: what is compulsory, what is voluntary, and what help exists? Do not automatically pay an amount that is not clear to you.

Welke kosten heeft onderwijs?
School en studie kunnen kosten hebben, maar niet elke rekening is verplicht. Er kunnen kosten zijn voor reizen, bepaalde materialen, een opleiding of een vrijwillige ouderbijdrage. Welke kosten gelden, hangt af van de schoolsoort en leeftijd.
Voor veel kinderen worden gewone schoolboeken door de school betaald. Een school kan voor extra activiteiten een vrijwillige ouderbijdrage vragen. Een kind mag niet worden uitgesloten van zulke activiteiten omdat ouders die bijdrage niet betalen.

Help with school and study costs
There are sometimes reimbursements for school, study, health care or childcare. Which scheme applies depends on age, type of education, income and other conditions. Ask the school, municipality, DUO or Dienst Toeslagen (Benefits Agency) which arrangement applies to your costs; each has different tasks.
For a voluntary parental contribution in primary or secondary school, you do not have to pay. You do not need to request an exemption or explain why you do not pay. Your child may still take part in all extra school activities, such as a school trip. For other costs, like certain study materials or a course, different rules may apply. Ask the school which costs are compulsory and what support or fund may be available.
Ask at the school, municipality, or DUO about the conditions and any deadlines for a reimbursement of other costs. For health care or childcare allowance, check with Dienst Toeslagen. Collect the required documents, submit an application on time, and keep the decision. If your application is refused, ask why and what the next step could be.

Hulp bij school- en studiekosten
Voor school, studie, zorg of opvang bestaan soms vergoedingen. Welke regeling past, hangt af van leeftijd, opleiding, inkomen en andere voorwaarden. Vraag school, gemeente, DUO of Dienst Toeslagen welke regeling voor jouw kosten bestaat; zij hebben verschillende taken.
Voor een vrijwillige ouderbijdrage op de basis- of middelbare school hoef je niet te betalen. Je hoeft geen kwijtschelding te vragen of uit te leggen waarom je niet betaalt. Je kind mag toch aan alle extra schoolactiviteiten meedoen, zoals een schoolreis. Voor andere kosten, zoals bepaalde leermiddelen of een opleiding, kunnen andere regels gelden.
