4.3.1

The huisartsenpost (GP out-of-hours service) is there for times outside the regular opening hours of your own GP: usually in the evening, at night, and during weekends. You call this service if you have a medical issue that cannot wait until your GP's practice opens again. Now is a good time to look up the telephone number for the huisartsenpost in your region; its address may be different from your GP's surgery.

When you call, a staff member will ask questions about your medical concern. This process is called triage. The staff member assesses how urgent your need for help is. You will receive advice, an appointment at the huisartsenpost, or a referral elsewhere. Sometimes you can remain at home with clear instructions. Call again if your symptoms change or become more severe. Also tell them over the phone which medicines you take and whether you have a fever, if this is relevant to your situation. This helps staff assess what is necessary.

Do not simply go to the huisartsenpost without calling if the local procedure says you must telephone first. Ordinary questions or requests for repeat prescriptions can usually wait until your GP is open again. This keeps the huisartsenpost available for issues that cannot wait.

If there is an immediate life-threatening situation, call 112. The huisartsenpost is also different from the emergency department at a hospital. If you are unsure whether your issue is urgent, you can ring the huisartsenpost and explain your situation. They will tell you what step is appropriate next.

Zij vertelt welke volgende stap passend is.
