Speaking Directly and Listening Well — supporting illustration
2.1.2

Many people in the Netherlands say quite directly what they think or want. A colleague might say: 'Can you finish this today?' This may sound brief, but it does not necessarily mean the colleague is angry. Pay attention to tone and context. People differ in this as well; not everyone is equally direct.

If you are unsure what someone means, it is better to ask for clarification rather than guess. Repeat an important point in your own words: 'Do you mean the work should be completed by five o’clock?' The other person can then confirm or correct what you have understood. This is especially useful at work, when seeking care, and when dealing with authorities. You do not need to understand every word to check the main point. Most importantly, ask what is expected of you and by when.

You can be clear and polite yourself. Say what you can do and what you cannot manage. If you need more time, say when you can respond. An explanation does not have to be long. 'I can come on Thursday, but not on Friday' already gives the other person useful information.

Good listening also means giving someone else space to speak. Let the other person finish and ask more if a word is unfamiliar. If you disagree, calmly explain why something is important to you. End a difficult conversation by repeating together what has been agreed, and who will take the next step.
