Making and Keeping an Appointment

For a visit to the general practitioner (GP), the municipality (gemeente), a school or your employer, you often have to make an appointment first. This can be done by telephone, online, or at a service desk. Briefly explain the reason for your visit; this allows the organisation to determine which staff member you need to see, how much time the conversation will require and whether you must bring any documents.
When you receive the appointment confirmation, check the date, time, location, and any specific instructions. A building might have several entrances. Therefore, find out how to reach the place and allow enough travel time. Many people in the Netherlands value appointments starting on time. Make sure to arrive before the arranged time. Write down the address and the name of the person you will be seeing. This can help you avoid searching in a large building or at a busy reception desk.
If you are unable to attend the appointment, inform the organisation as soon as possible. Sometimes, another person may be able to take your slot. Immediately ask when you can make a new appointment. If you are delayed on your way there, call the organisation; they will tell you whether the meeting can still go ahead. If you do not show up without notice, it may have consequences for your application or treatment.
Keep any email, text message, or letter containing the appointment details. It might also mention a deadline for sending in documents. If you do not understand the instructions, seek help in good time. Forgetting a document could mean you have to come back again.
