Taking Part in Important Events

People often come together for important events, but not every family has the same customs. When a baby is born, you may congratulate the parents and ask when a visit would be welcome. On a birthday, you usually congratulate the person whose birthday it is. Sometimes a guest brings something; at some workplaces, it is actually the person celebrating who provides the treats.
Someone who has passed an exam or received a diploma is often sent a card or congratulated personally. For a wedding, the invitation tells you when and where you are welcome. Check carefully whether you are invited only to the ceremony or also to the celebration. If you are not sure, ask the organiser. In some families, children are welcome at the celebration; in others, they are not. Invitations often indicate how many people are reserved a place.
The atmosphere is different in the event of a death. You might say or write 'gecondoleerd' to someone who has lost a loved one. Often, listening is more helpful than saying a lot. A funeral or cremation takes place as the family desires. Read the card or invitation to know if visitors are welcome and which time has been set.
A gift, card or visit is never mandatory in the same way for everyone. Ask what the person concerned would find comfortable, and also communicate your own boundaries. A simple, sincere response is usually enough. This allows you to take part without pretending to know all of the customs already.
