Ketikoti: the long road to recovery

Five years ago, the mayor of the city said 'sorry' for what the city administration had done in the past regarding slavery and the slave trade. For three centuries, the city earned money by selling people as slaves and having them work. Since the apology, special events have taken place on Ketikoti, the day slavery was abolished in Suriname.

On that day, people collectively reflect on the past. The mayor and people from the city talk more often about this history. Schools now provide more education about slavery.

There have also been commemorations and new monuments erected to show that the city values its past. Many people believe these steps help, but some want the city to do even more to heal from the past.
