Nearly a quarter of students in universities of applied sciences and research universities went abroad during their studies

In the 2024/25 academic year, 24 percent of students who completed a programme at a university of applied sciences or research university spent part of their studies abroad. Most of these students stayed abroad for three months or longer. This figure is higher than last year.
More and more students are also gaining international experience online. Fourteen percent of all graduates took online classes or worked with students from abroad. Most students go abroad for three months or longer (17 percent).
A smaller group, just over 5 percent, stays abroad for less than three months. For a small proportion, it is not known how long they went abroad. Before the coronavirus pandemic, fewer students went abroad for longer periods; now more are doing so again.
Among research university students, nearly 18 percent go abroad for three months or longer. Among university of applied sciences students, the figure is 17 percent. This is still not as high as before the coronavirus pandemic.
At that time, travelling abroad was much more difficult. Students are increasingly gaining international experience online. Fourteen percent of graduates did so in 2024/25.
Eleven percent worked with students from abroad, and 7 percent took online classes at a foreign institution. More university of applied sciences students than research university students participate online: 18 percent compared with 10 percent. Some students combine their stay abroad with online activities.
In 2024/25, 36 percent did so. This is more common among university of applied sciences students than among research university students. Students say that international experience helps them learn about other cultures, become more independent, and learn more about their field.
It also improves their language skills and ability to view things from different perspectives. University of applied sciences students more often say that their international experience gives them greater knowledge of their field than research university students do. Graduates who actually went abroad more often say that they became more independent and learned more about their field and other cultures.
Students who gain experience online more often say that they are now better at seeing things from different perspectives.
