Consumer confidence slightly less negative in September

In September 2026, consumer confidence was slightly higher than in August, Statistics Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, CBS) says. The score rose from -34 to -33. People are somewhat more negative about the economy.

They have a more pessimistic view of the economic climate, as this score fell from -57 to -58. This applies both to expectations for the next twelve months and to the past year. Nevertheless, people are more willing to make purchases.

Willingness to buy rose from -19 to -17. People are particularly more positive about their own finances over the next twelve months. Their view of the past twelve months has not changed.

Consumers also believe that it is a slightly better time to buy major items such as furniture or electronics. Consumer confidence is still below the average recorded over the past twenty years. The all-time low was -59 in September and October 2022.

The all-time high was +36 in January 2000.
