Most birthdays fall on September 30

In the Netherlands, most people have their birthday on September 30. In 2025, this amounted to approximately 44,000 people. Many other days at the end of September also appear in the top ten most common birthdays.

These include September 20, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, and 29. May 2 and 3 also appear on this list. On average, more than 41,000 people in the Netherlands celebrate their birthday each day.

These figures cover more than 15 million people who were born in the Netherlands and whose dates of birth are registered with their municipality. Few people have their birthday on public holidays. New Year's Day has the fewest birthdays, at approximately 31,300.

There are also few birthdays on other holidays, such as Christmas, Saint Nicholas Day, and Liberation Day. This may be because planned births, such as cesarean sections, do not often take place on public holidays. By contrast, more people have their birthday just before or after such a holiday.

Fewer people also have their birthday on April 1. Sometimes parents deliberately avoid this date when scheduling a hospital birth. The time of year when people have their birthday differs by age group.

Younger people are more likely to have their birthday in summer or late summer. For people born between 1940 and 1980, spring is often the season with the most birthdays. People born before 1940 are more likely to have their birthday in autumn.

The development of the contraceptive pill in the 1960s made it easier to plan births. That is why there are now more births in late summer. In 2025, the most babies were born on Tuesday, September 16: 565 babies.

This was followed by August 27, with 563 children, and June 20, with 561 children. All ten days with the most births were weekdays. The fewest babies were born on January 1: 305.

Nine of the ten days with the fewest births fell on weekends. More children are therefore born on weekdays, because hospitals have more staff then. In the past, this difference was smaller because more women gave birth at home.
