Fires, deaths, and damage to nature (Monday, May 4)

In Oldenzaal, someone died on Sunday afternoon due to a fire in a house. Two family members inhaled smoke and went to the hospital. In Hoogeveen, eight houses had to be evacuated; no one was injured and residents are not allowed to return.

On the cruise ship Hondius (Hondius) in the Atlantic Ocean, at least three passengers died. According to the World Health Organization, it may be hantavirus; two of the deceased are Dutch. Also, in northern France, three Dutch people died. Also, two activists arrived at Schiphol Airport after the interception of a fleet heading to Gaza.

In IJsselstein, the town hall and theater were damaged by bricks and stickers on Saturday night. The police are investigating a link to protests against emergency shelter for asylum seekers. Fireworks were also set off, an officer was injured, and there have been no arrests.

The wildfire near ’t Harde probably affected many small animals. It mainly concerns reptiles, amphibians, and burrowing animals. Ground-dwelling birds are also at risk, and recovery takes a long time.
