Maria wins, football news, and agreement on Greenland (Sunday, September 20)

Maria Dragan from Groningen won the final at Ahoy in Rotterdam on Saturday. The 9-year-old sang “Stronger Together,” and Noud Postma from Haren also took part. In October, she will go to Malta to represent the Netherlands.

Fortuna Sittard won 1–0 away to Willem II in Tilburg on Saturday evening. Philip Brittijn scored ten minutes before the end; Fortuna are sixth, while Willem II are last. Borussia Dortmund also won 1–0 away to Stuttgart and reclaimed the top spot.

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have reached an agreement on Greenland’s security. Denmark and Greenland say that the island will remain theirs; details are not yet known. Trump wants many troops there, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is positive about the agreement.

A commemoration of Operation Market Garden was held on the Ginkelse Heide near Ede on Saturday. Hundreds of parachutists jumped from airplanes, just as they did in 1944. Between 40,000 and 50,000 visitors attended, along with veterans and vintage aircraft.

The Clingendael Institute (a Dutch international-relations think tank) says that people in the Netherlands should keep more food at home. At present, there is enough food for about a week in the event of major disasters. That is why the institute recommends keeping enough food for eight days, not three.
