There are several forms of assistance available for school and study expenses. The arrangement that applies to you depends on your age, type of education, income and the specific costs involved. A school can explain the amounts it charges; the gemeente (municipality) may have local schemes; DUO is responsible for certain types of student finance and support for study costs. Dienst Toeslagen handles matters such as the childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag). These organisations each have different responsibilities.
You are not required to pay the voluntary parental contribution at primary or secondary school. You do not need to request an exemption or explain why you are not paying. Your child is still allowed to take part in extra activities, such as a school trip. Other rules may apply to other costs. For each bill you receive, always ask: is this compulsory, voluntary, or does it depend on a choice?
Support may be available for necessary materials, transport or a course of study. Ask the school or municipality about schemes or funds that fit your situation. For certain costs, you can also ask whether a reduction or exemption is possible. Check the conditions and deadlines. Sometimes you will need evidence of income, enrolment or expenses for an application. Only collect the documents specifically requested by the organisation and keep the decision on your application.
If your application is rejected, read the reason carefully. Perhaps a document is missing, or perhaps you do not meet a requirement. Ask what your next step could be and when you need to respond. Do not count on reimbursement until you have received a decision. Having a clear understanding of both costs and the different schemes will help you find the right organisation in time.

Hulp bij school- en studiekosten
Voor school en studie bestaan verschillende vormen van hulp. Welke regeling past, hangt af van leeftijd, opleiding, inkomen en het soort kosten. Een school kan uitleggen welke bedragen zij vraagt; de gemeente kent lokale regelingen; DUO gaat over bepaalde vormen van studiefinanciering en tegemoetkoming in studiekosten. Dienst Toeslagen behandelt bijvoorbeeld kinderopvangtoeslag. Deze organisaties hebben verschillende taken.
De vrijwillige ouderbijdrage op de basis- of middelbare school hoef je niet te betalen. Je hoeft daarvoor geen kwijtschelding aan te vragen of uit te leggen waarom je niet betaalt. Je kind mag toch meedoen aan extra activiteiten, zoals een schoolreis. Voor andere kosten kunnen andere regels gelden. Vraag dus bij iedere rekening: is dit verplicht, vrijwillig of afhankelijk van een keuze?
Bij noodzakelijke materialen, vervoer of een opleiding kan ondersteuning mogelijk zijn. Vraag de school of gemeente welke regelingen of fondsen in jouw situatie bestaan. Bij bepaalde kosten kun je ook vragen of vermindering of kwijtschelding mogelijk is. Kijk naar de voorwaarden en termijnen. Voor een aanvraag heb je soms bewijs van inkomen, inschrijving of kosten nodig. Verzamel alleen de documenten die de organisatie vraagt en bewaar het besluit.
Wordt een aanvraag afgewezen, lees waarom. Misschien ontbreekt een document, misschien voldoe je niet aan een voorwaarde. Vraag welke vervolgstap mogelijk is en wanneer je moet reageren. Reken niet op een vergoeding voordat je een besluit hebt gekregen. Een helder onderscheid tussen kosten en regelingen helpt je op tijd de juiste organisatie te vinden.
