The General Practitioner as First Point of Contact

For both physical and mental health concerns, the general practitioner (GP), or huisarts, is usually your first point of contact. Find a GP practice near you and ask if they are accepting new patients. Sometimes a practice is full, or may have a limit based on distance from your home. If you are unable to register, ask your health insurer to help you find a GP.
To make an appointment, you can call the practice or use the method they prefer. The assistant will often ask you what your symptoms are and how long you have had them. This helps the practice to decide how urgently you need help. It is a good idea to write down your questions ahead of time and bring a list of any medications you are currently taking. You do not need to have a diagnosis yourself.
Some practices also have a practice support worker (praktijkondersteuner) who can provide support for ongoing health issues or for conversations concerning mental health. The GP can refer you to other types of care if needed. If you find using Dutch during consultations difficult, you can request a professional interpreter. Discuss how an interpreter can be arranged and who will cover any associated costs before your appointment, as this can differ depending on the healthcare situation.
Both the GP and the practice support worker are bound by medical professional confidentiality. They are not allowed to share your medical information without your permission, unless the law provides an exception. You are entitled to ask what information is in your medical file and with whom it has been shared. Be honest about what you are feeling, even if it is difficult—confidentiality exists to make these conversations possible in a secure way.
Try this
- Find a practice nearby and ask if they are accepting new patients.
- Make an appointment and mention your health concern or if you need language support.
- Bring your questions and a list of your medications with you.
