During pregnancy, you are usually supported by a midwife (verloskundige) or other healthcare professionals. They monitor how you and the baby are doing, and discuss any questions about the birth. Sometimes, care in hospital is necessary. During pregnancy, ask which number you should call when labour starts or if you become concerned.
After birth, maternity care (kraamzorg) can help at home. A maternity nurse checks on the health and care of the parent and child and explains what to expect in the first days. Arrange this care in good time and ask your health insurer exactly what costs are covered and whether you will need to pay something yourself. The precise type of care depends on your own situation.
For young children, there is the consultatiebureau (child health clinic). Parents can ask questions about growth, development, feeding and health checks there. You will also get information about vaccinations and other forms of support. The consultatiebureau is not the same as a general practitioner (GP, huisarts). If a child is unwell, you can call the GP. At the check-ups, parents can mention what they have noticed at home, such as sleep, eating or activity. The staff member can then explain what is appropriate for the child’s age.
You are allowed to ask any care provider why something is being done and what choices are available. If you do not understand an explanation, ask for simpler words or for support with the language. Keep phone numbers and appointment details in a place where you can quickly find them. In emergencies the procedures are different to a normal check-up.
