Have you obtained a diploma outside the Netherlands? In that case, a diploma evaluation can help show to which Dutch educational level your diploma is comparable. Such an evaluation is not a new Dutch diploma. It also does not automatically grant you permission to practise a particular profession in the Netherlands. Therefore, first ask what the employer or educational institution needs the evaluation for.
There are various routes for applying to an educational course. A university of applied sciences (hogeschool) or university can sometimes assess your diploma themselves or request an evaluation through Nuffic. At a vocational college (ROC), you can ask whether they can arrange an evaluation via SBB. If you have not yet chosen a course or employer, the Information Centre for Diploma Evaluation (Informatiecentrum DiplomaWaardering, IcDW) can explain which route suits your situation. You can also submit an application yourself via IDW. Sometimes, UWV can assist you with this.
Keep your diploma, academic transcript, and any available translations safe. Make sure to ask which specific documents are needed before you incur any costs. A diploma evaluation assesses your education, but not automatically your work experience. Therefore, also collect employer statements and descriptions of the tasks you have previously carried out. During a discussion, an employer can take your experience into account.
For certain professions, such as nurse or teacher, there are separate legal rules. Such a regulated profession may require recognition or registration before you are allowed to practise it. Look up the rules for your specific profession and ask which authority makes the decision. Even if a formal evaluation is not mandatory, you can often still look for work; what is required depends on the role.

Een diploma of ervaring laten beoordelen
Heb je buiten Nederland een diploma behaald? Dan kan een diplomawaardering helpen om te laten zien met welk Nederlands opleidingsniveau het diploma vergelijkbaar is. Een waardering is geen nieuw Nederlands diploma. Zij zegt ook niet vanzelf dat je een bepaald beroep in Nederland mag uitoefenen. Vraag daarom eerst waarvoor een werkgever of opleiding de waardering nodig heeft.
Voor een opleiding zijn er verschillende routes. Een hogeschool of universiteit kan je diploma soms zelf beoordelen of een waardering via Nuffic aanvragen. Bij een ROC kun je vragen of het een waardering via SBB regelt. Heb je nog geen opleiding of werkgever gekozen, dan kan het Informatiecentrum DiplomaWaardering, IcDW, uitleggen welke route past. Via IDW kun je zelf een aanvraag doen. Soms helpt UWV daarbij.
Bewaar je diploma, cijferlijst en eventuele vertalingen. Vraag welke documenten precies nodig zijn voordat je kosten maakt. Een diplomawaardering beoordeelt de opleiding, niet automatisch je werkervaring. Verzamel daarom ook werkgeversverklaringen en beschrijvingen van taken die je eerder hebt gedaan. In een gesprek kan een werkgever die ervaring meewegen.
Voor sommige beroepen, zoals verpleegkundige of leraar, gelden aparte wettelijke regels. Zo'n gereglementeerd beroep kan erkenning of registratie vereisen voordat je het mag uitvoeren. Zoek de regels voor het specifieke beroep op en vraag welke instantie beslist. Ook zonder verplichte waardering kun je vaak naar werk zoeken; wat nodig is, hangt af van de functie.
