Learning does not end when you leave school. Further training means learning new knowledge or skills alongside what you already know. Sometimes, a short training is enough, for example, to work more safely. For another job, a longer programme may be needed.
Start with your goal. If you want to speak better with customers, a course that practises work-related conversations will probably help more than a general course. If you want to operate machines, check which training or safety instructions employers require. An employer, municipality, UWV or training provider can think along with you, but always ask which option fits your situation.
Compare courses before signing up. How many hours of lessons are there? Is the course during the day or in the evening? In what language is the explanation given? What should you already know, how much does it cost and who pays? If your employer pays for the course, ask them to clarify which agreements are stated about this in your contract. Some courses may also be provided in the workplace. In that case, ask who will supervise you, when you can practise, and whether the new task will become part of your regular job afterwards.
Also, ask what you will receive afterwards. A certificate of attendance shows you took part; a diploma or professional registration has a different significance. After the course, discuss how you can use your new knowledge at work. In this way, learning becomes a practical step towards work that suits you better or a step up to another role.

Leren tijdens je loopbaan
Leren stopt niet als je school verlaat. Bijscholing betekent dat je nieuwe kennis of vaardigheden leert naast wat je al kunt. Soms is een korte training genoeg, bijvoorbeeld voor een veiligere manier van werken. Voor een ander beroep is misschien een langere opleiding nodig.
Begin bij je doel. Wil je beter met klanten praten, dan helpt een cursus met gesprekken uit jouw werk waarschijnlijk meer dan een algemene cursus. Wil je met machines werken, kijk dan welke opleiding of veiligheidsinstructie werkgevers vragen. Een werkgever, gemeente, UWV of opleider kan meedenken, maar vraag altijd welke keuze bij jouw situatie past.
Vergelijk opleidingen voordat je je inschrijft. Hoeveel uren les zijn er? Is de cursus overdag of 's avonds? In welke taal krijg je uitleg? Wat moet je al weten, hoeveel kost het en wie betaalt? Als je werkgever de cursus betaalt, laat dan uitleggen welke afspraken daarover in het contract staan. Een cursus kan ook op de werkplek plaatsvinden. Vraag dan wie je begeleidt, wanneer je kunt oefenen en of de nieuwe taak na afloop deel van je gewone werk wordt.
Vraag ook wat je na afloop ontvangt. Een bewijs van deelname laat zien dat je hebt meegedaan; een diploma of beroepsregistratie heeft een andere betekenis. Bespreek na de cursus hoe je de nieuwe kennis op het werk kunt gebruiken. Zo wordt leren een concrete stap naar werk dat beter bij je past of naar een volgende functie.
