If you receive a benefit, you have rights and obligations. In the official decision, you can find information about how much you will receive and what information that amount is based on. Check carefully whether your income, home address, and family situation have been entered correctly. If you do not understand the decision, ask for an explanation. If there is something incorrect, make sure to ask in good time how you can have it corrected or how you can lodge an objection.
For many benefits, you are required to look for work, keep to appointments, and in principle accept suitable work that is offered to you. What counts as suitable work depends on the rules for your benefit and your personal situation. Therefore, read the rules that specifically apply to you. If you are unable to take an appointment or a job due to illness, immediately inform the benefits agency and ask what information they require from you.
If your income or living situation changes, always report this in good time. Starting a new job, earning extra income, moving in with someone, or moving house can all affect the amount of your benefit. Even a change that seems small can be important for the calculation. Always save a copy or confirmation of any notification you send.
Do not ignore a letter even if you find the language or the task difficult. Ask for help from the agency itself or from a trusted advisor. Also pay careful attention to the date by which you need to respond. This way, you can make use of your right to support and at the same time avoid missing an obligation. You can go through the letter together with someone you trust and write down the questions you want to ask. Then, ask the agency to confirm the answer in writing.

Rechten en plichten bij een uitkering
Wie een uitkering krijgt, heeft rechten en plichten. In het besluit staat hoeveel je krijgt en op welke gegevens dat bedrag is gebaseerd. Controleer of je inkomen, woonadres en gezinssituatie goed zijn ingevuld. Begrijp je het besluit niet, vraag uitleg. Als iets niet klopt, vraag tijdig hoe je het kunt laten herstellen of bezwaar kunt maken.
Bij veel uitkeringen moet je werk zoeken, afspraken nakomen en in principe passend aangeboden werk accepteren. Wat passend werk is, hangt af van de regeling en jouw omstandigheden. Lees daarom de regels die specifiek voor jou gelden. Kun je door ziekte een afspraak of baan niet aannemen, vertel dat meteen aan de uitkeringsinstantie en vraag welke informatie zij nodig heeft.
Verandert je inkomen of woonsituatie, geef dat dan op tijd door. Nieuw werk, extra inkomsten, samenwonen of een verhuizing kunnen invloed hebben op de hoogte van de uitkering. Een verandering die klein lijkt, kan toch belangrijk zijn voor de berekening. Bewaar een kopie of bevestiging van je melding.
Negeer een brief niet als je de taal of de opdracht lastig vindt. Vraag hulp bij de instantie zelf of bij een betrouwbare hulpverlener. Let ook op de datum waarop je moet reageren. Zo kun je je recht op ondersteuning gebruiken en tegelijk voorkomen dat je een verplichting mist. Je kunt samen met iemand die je vertrouwt de brief doorlezen en de vragen opschrijven. Vraag de instantie daarna om het antwoord schriftelijk te bevestigen.
