Municipality of Utrecht Expected to Surpass 400,000th Resident in 2030

Utrecht had a total of 378,140 residents on January 1, 2026. The municipality believes that by 2030 more than 400,000 people will live in Utrecht. By 2039, it is expected that 450,000 people will live there.

For 2045, the municipality expects 488,000 residents. Many new people are arriving because many new houses are being built. The municipality plans to build approximately 57,000 additional houses by 2044.

About 3,000 houses are added each year. These plans are meant to help ensure there are enough homes for the growing population.
