Hospitality turnover grows by more than 2 percent in the second quarter of 2026

In the second quarter of 2026, the hospitality sector earned 2.2 percent more money than in the same period in 2025. That is according to the CBS (Statistics Netherlands). There are differences between hotels and dining establishments.

Hotels and holiday parks together earned almost 1 percent less, but restaurants, cafés, and fast food outlets earned 3.5 percent more. Hotels performed worse because overnight stays became more expensive. Since January 2026, the tax (VAT) on hotel rooms and holiday homes has increased from 9 to 21 percent.

This does not apply to campsites; campsites and holiday parks even earned 1.5 percent more. Food and drink establishments did well. They sold 3.5 percent more than a year ago.

Especially canteens and companies that deliver food earned much more (4.1 percent). Fast food outlets increased by 3.9 percent, while regular restaurants and cafés both increased by 3.2 percent. There are increasingly more fast food outlets.

In 2026, there are 19,400, nearly twice as many as in 2007. There are also increasingly more restaurants. In 2007, there were 11,100, now there are 19,200.

According to the CBS, hospitality entrepreneurs are less negative about the future than earlier this year. In the second quarter, confidence in the hospitality sector was still very low (-30.1), but in the third quarter it was slightly less low (-19.5). Only in agriculture, forestry and fishing is confidence even lower.
