Inflation in August 3.3 Percent in Preliminary Estimate

In August 2026, inflation in the Netherlands was 3.3 percent, says the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). This figure is a preliminary estimate because not all data are yet available. In July, inflation was 3.2 percent.

Inflation means that prices for goods and services become more expensive. The CBS looks at the prices of many products every month. They compare the prices with the same month a year earlier.

They also check whether goods are more expensive this month than last month. In August, goods and services were 0.3 percent more expensive than in July. In the last ten years, prices in August were usually 0.4 percent higher than the previous month.

Sometimes goods are temporarily cheaper, for example due to clothing sales. This price decrease is not permanent; it is seasonal. The CBS also looks at different product groups, such as clothing or services.

Detailed figures will be released on September 8. The CBS also publishes figures according to the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which is a European measurement method. In August, inflation according to the HICP was 2.8 percent.

In July, it was 3.0 percent. The difference between the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and HICP is mainly that the HICP does not include the costs of living in an owner-occupied home. From 2026 onwards, the CBS calculates inflation with new base years: 2025=100.
