In August, 9 percent more bankruptcies than a year earlier

In August 2026, 304 companies in the Netherlands went bankrupt. This was reported by Statistics Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, CBS). That is 24 more than in August 2025 and 38 more than in July 2026.
The bankruptcy rate was slightly higher in August 2026 than a year earlier. At that time, 8.1 companies went bankrupt for every one hundred thousand companies. In August 2025, the figure was 7.6.
The record was set in March 2015, when 24.8 companies went bankrupt for every one hundred thousand companies. The lowest number was recorded in August 2021, with 3.4 bankruptcies. After 2021, the number of bankruptcies rose gradually until 2024.
After that, the number remained roughly the same until the autumn of 2024. Since then, the number of bankruptcies has declined slightly. In August 2026, the hospitality sector was hit particularly hard.
In that sector, 21 companies went bankrupt for every one hundred thousand hospitality businesses. That is fewer than in August last year, when the figure was 30.8. There were also many bankruptcies in the manufacturing industry.
The figures have not been adjusted for the number of days the courts were open.
