Fines, energy, and violence in the news (Monday, March 23)

After a serious accident on the N279 near Heeswijk-Dinther, 112 motorists received a fine. They were filming or taking pictures while driving, which is prohibited. The fine is 440 euros. On Friday, three people were injured; two went to the hospital.

The Netherlands obtains much of its energy from other countries, especially from the United States. Most crude oil comes from the US, followed by Kazakhstan and Norway. More than 30 percent of gas comes as LNG from the US. Experts, Gasunie (the Dutch natural gas infrastructure and transportation company), and Mijnraad (Mining Council) see risks and want imports from more countries.

After a settler was killed and calls for revenge, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villages. According to reports, houses, cars, and fields were set on fire. The army reported arson during the night from Saturday to Sunday.

According to Katz and Netanyahu, the army must demolish houses more quickly in South Lebanon. Sources say crossings over the Litani River must also be removed. Trouw writes that Israel is thus creating a buffer zone against threats.
