Understanding your health insurance — supporting illustration
4.4.1

If you live or work in the Netherlands, in principle you must have basic health insurance (basiszorgverzekering). You choose your own health insurer. They cannot refuse you for the basic insurance because of your state of health. Children are also insured, but do not pay a premium for basic health insurance. Check which rules apply to your personal situation.

The government decides what is included in the basic package (basispakket). This package covers, under certain conditions, care from a general practitioner (GP) or huisarts, district nursing, maternity care, some forms of elderly care, and mental health care. For children under 18, a large part of dental care and a limited number of physiotherapy treatments are included in the package. For adults, different rules apply. Therefore, always check in advance whether your current policy covers a particular treatment.

You pay a monthly premium (premie). For some care, if you are an adult, you must pay an amount called the deductible (eigen risico) first: this is the part of insured care that you pay yourself. An ordinary visit to the GP does not count towards this deductible. A co-payment (eigen bijdrage) is different. That is the portion of certain care costs which you pay yourself, separate from the deductible. You can ask your insurer if you can pay the deductible in instalments.

Compare insurers based on the premium, the policy terms, and which healthcare providers have contracts with them. A supplementary insurance policy (aanvullende verzekering) is voluntary and can be useful if you need care that is not, or is only partially, covered by the basic package. However, you pay an extra premium for this. Check what is reimbursed, and if there are any conditions or waiting periods. You can in principle switch to another insurer every year around the end of the year, following the official deadlines.

Four words on your health insurance policy
TermMeaning
PremieThe amount you pay for your insurance. Children under 18 do not pay a premium for the basic insurance.
Eigen risicoAn adult pays certain costs for care covered by the basic package themselves first, up to the amount of the deductible. A GP visit is not included here.
Eigen bijdrageA portion of the costs for certain care, aids or medicines that you pay yourself. This is separate from the deductible.
Aanvullende verzekeringA voluntary extra insurance for care which is not, or not fully, covered by the basic package. Check the premium and policy terms.

Try this

  • Write down what kind of care you are likely to need.
  • Compare premiums, policy details, contracted healthcare providers, and voluntary extra coverage.
  • Check the deductible, possible co-payments, and the period for switching insurers.

Check your understanding

Does an ordinary visit to the GP count towards the deductible? Show answer

No.

Care provided by the GP is excluded from the deductible.

What is the difference between deductible (eigen risico) and co-payment (eigen bijdrage)? Show answer

You first pay the deductible for much of your basic care; a co-payment is a portion of certain care costs you pay yourself.

The rules and amounts can change; check your current policy for details.

Is a supplementary insurance policy (aanvullende verzekering) compulsory? Show answer

No.

It can be useful for care that is not, or only partly, included in the basic package.

You want to choose a policy and keep your current healthcare provider. Besides the premium, what do you compare? Show answer

Policy terms, whether the healthcare provider has a contract, reimbursements, claims handling, and any additional coverage.

The lowest premium alone does not show which care is covered for your situation.

You expect to need extra physiotherapy. What do you ask about a supplementary insurance policy? Show answer

Which treatments and conditions apply, what the extra premium is, and whether the reimbursement is useful for me.

Supplementary insurance is voluntary and varies by policy.

You are unable to pay a high deductible all at once. What possibility do you ask about? Show answer

Whether the insurer offers payment in instalments.

Arrangements may differ between insurers.

Name three types of care that may be covered under the basic package, subject to conditions. Show answer

For example, GP care, district nursing, and maternity care.

Always check the current terms of the basic package.

A child and an adult both need dental care or physiotherapy. Why should you check the policy for both separately? Show answer

For children under 18, much dental care and a limited number of physiotherapy treatments are included in the basic package; for adults, different rules apply and extra coverage may be needed.

The exact reimbursement depends on the care and the current policy terms.

Controleer welke regels in jouw persoonlijke situatie gelden.

Toon antwoord
