Before you move, check in your rental or purchase contract which utilities are already connected to the property and which ones you will need to arrange yourself. For electricity and, if needed, gas, you choose an energy supplier. Water is provided by the supplier for your region. If you need internet and telephone, you will need to set those up separately. Ask when each contract starts and keep all confirmations safely.
Not every house uses gas. In some situations, you pay certain costs via your landlord or as part of service charges. In that case, ask how the usage is measured and divided. This helps you avoid having a duplicate contract or receiving a bill you do not understand. When setting up a new contract, compare not just the monthly price, but also the contract duration and all the terms and conditions.
On the day you receive the keys to your new home, write down the meter readings for electricity, gas, and water, if there are meters for these in the property. Take photos where the numbers can be clearly seen. Send the readings to the suppliers as instructed and keep a copy for your own records. This will help if you later need to discuss whether your initial bill is correct.
If there is a failure or breakdown, first check exactly what is not working and whether your neighbours have the same problem. If your internet is down, report it to your provider; for problems with gas or electricity, the network operator is usually the correct route. Issues with water, or defects in the property itself, require contacting different organisations. Also report a defect to the landlord in writing if they are responsible. Small daily repairs are often the tenant's duty; if in doubt, ask who takes care of essential maintenance. Use the official emergency procedures if there is any direct danger.
Try this
- Check which connections exist and sign up with the correct suppliers in time.
- Take photographs of the meter readings when you receive the keys and keep the confirmation.
- If there is a failure, note what is wrong, report it to the right organisation and keep a record of your report.
