Energy and water cost money. On the bill, you can usually see how much you have used, which rate applies, and which fixed costs you are paying. Compare the start and end reading from a meter with your own photos. A monthly advance payment is only an estimate; on the annual bill (jaarafrekening), you will see whether you get money back or still have to pay extra. If an advance payment seems very low, this does not actually make the energy itself cheaper. At the end of the year, this can then result in a large payment.
The bill depends on both usage and price. Two households on the same rate will still pay different usage costs if one uses more electricity. With the same usage, a higher rate or higher fixed charges could still mean a different bill. So do not only look at the monthly amount a supplier suggests.
With a fixed energy contract, the agreed delivery rate remains the same during the contract period. The total bill can still change due to your usage or other costs. With a variable contract, the supplier can adjust the rate; with a dynamic contract, it can change more often. Also compare the duration of the contract, termination terms, and fixed costs.
Careful use of energy and water can save you money and is better for the environment. Turn lights off when no one is in the room, take shorter showers, and do not let warmth escape unnecessarily. The measures that are most effective depend on your home. If you think the annual bill is incorrect, first check the meter readings and rates, then ask the supplier for an explanation.

Rekeningen en zuinig verbruik
Energie en water kosten geld. Op de rekening zie je meestal hoeveel je hebt gebruikt, welk tarief geldt en welke vaste kosten je betaalt. Vergelijk de beginstand en eindstand van een meter met je eigen foto's. Een maandelijks voorschot is een schatting; op de jaarafrekening staat of je geld terugkrijgt of nog moet bijbetalen. Een voorschot dat erg laag lijkt, maakt de energie zelf niet goedkoper. Aan het eind van het jaar kan dan juist een grote betaling volgen.
De rekening hangt af van verbruik én prijs. Twee huishoudens met hetzelfde tarief betalen verschillende verbruikskosten als het ene huishouden meer stroom gebruikt. Bij gelijk verbruik kunnen een hoger tarief of hogere vaste kosten toch een andere rekening geven. Kijk dus niet alleen naar het maandbedrag dat een leverancier voorstelt.
Bij een vast energiecontract blijft het afgesproken leveringstarief tijdens de contractduur gelijk. De totale rekening kan nog veranderen door je verbruik of andere kosten. Bij een variabel contract kan de leverancier het tarief wijzigen; bij een dynamisch contract verandert het vaker. Vergelijk ook de looptijd, opzegvoorwaarden en vaste kosten.
Zuinig gebruik van energie en water kan geld besparen en is beter voor het milieu. Doe lampen uit als niemand in de kamer is, douche korter en laat warmte niet onnodig ontsnappen. Welke maatregel echt helpt, hangt af van de woning. Denk je dat de jaarafrekening niet klopt, controleer dan eerst meterstanden en tarieven en vraag daarna de leverancier om uitleg.
