For many matters, you need to contact a government organisation: for example, the municipality (gemeente) regarding a change of address, the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) for taxes, or the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for a residence permit. This contact usually begins on a website. Before you enter any personal details, always check the name of the organisation and the web address. A message containing urgency or an unfamiliar link is not proof that the sender is genuinely a government body.
The citizen service number, known as the burgerservicenummer or BSN, is your personal identification number for contact with government authorities and also for healthcare matters. You use DigiD to identify yourself online with organisations that accept DigiD. Your password, PIN code and confirmation codes are strictly confidential. An employee who assists you does not require these codes. Always access the official website yourself in your browser, rather than using a link from an unexpected message.
A letter may ask you to respond, make a payment, or provide a document. Check the date and any deadline: by when do you need to reply? Keep the letter and a copy or confirmation of your response. If you do not understand the letter, telephone the organisation using the number you find on its official website. You can also ask for help at a library or information point. Allow someone to explain what the letter says, but always keep control over your login details.
For example, when moving house, first check on the website of your new municipality to see when and how to report your move. Sometimes this can be done online; sometimes you need to make an appointment. Read which information you need, report your move promptly, and check later that your address is recorded correctly. Veilig contact met de overheid
Voor veel zaken heb je contact met een overheidsorganisatie: de gemeente voor een verhuizing, de Belastingdienst voor belasting of de IND voor een verblijfsvergunning. Dat contact begint vaak op een website. Controleer de naam van de organisatie en het webadres voordat je persoonlijke gegevens invult. Een bericht met haast of een onbekende link is geen bewijs dat de afzender echt de overheid is.
Het burgerservicenummer, of BSN, is je persoonlijke nummer voor contact met de overheid en onder meer de zorg. DigiD gebruik je om je online te identificeren bij diensten die DigiD accepteren. Je wachtwoord, pincode en bevestigingscodes zijn geheim. Een medewerker die je helpt, heeft deze codes niet nodig. Open de officiële website zelf in je browser in plaats van via een onverwacht bericht.
Een brief kan om een antwoord, betaling of document vragen. Zoek de datum en de termijn: vóór wanneer moet je reageren? Bewaar de brief en een kopie of bevestiging van je antwoord.
