Which Organisation Can Help? — supporting illustration
6.1.2

When you need help, begin with the question: what exactly is the problem? Not every organisation does the same thing. The municipality can explain what local facilities are available. In cases of debt, municipal debt assistance (schuldhulpverlening) can help you map out the situation. The Nibud offers general information on managing money, but does not provide individual debt help. A food bank (voedselbank) can, under certain conditions, give temporary food assistance.

For questions about health in your region, you can find information from the municipal health service (GGD). If you have an illness or complaint, you usually contact your general practitioner (huisarts). For legal questions, the Juridisch Loket may be suitable. If you are concerned about upbringing or the situation at home, a school, GP, municipality, social work or youth help services may play a role. The support you receive depends on your question and your circumstances.

You do not need to know immediately which body is responsible. At the municipality or library, say briefly what help you are looking for and ask for a referral. Ask for the name of the organisation, how to get in touch, and which documents you need to bring. Also note any appointments and deadlines. If an organisation refers you elsewhere, ask why and what the next step is.

Only share information necessary for your enquiry. Usually, you do not have to provide your citizen service number (BSN) or medical details for general information. For a real application, the organisation may ask for supporting documents. In that case, check that you are communicating with the correct organisation. Seeking help is a practical skill: you describe your need, find the appropriate contact, and check what happens next.
