The Personal Records Database, or BRP (Basisregistratie Personen), contains information about people registered with a Dutch municipality. This includes details such as your name, address, and data about birth or marriage. The municipality uses this register for its own tasks, and other organisations may also need this information to fulfil their legal duties. This is why it is essential that the data is correct.
If you move house, you must notify the municipality of your new address according to the rules and deadlines that apply to your particular move. For events such as birth, marriage, divorce, or death, different steps are needed. Sometimes, an official or an institution will notify changes, but you should not assume that every change is known everywhere without checking. Ask the municipality which documents are required and keep confirmation of your notification.
Recognition of a child, known in Dutch as 'erkenning', is a legal act by which someone becomes a legal parent under certain conditions. This is different from simply caring for the child. The rules depend on the parents’ circumstances; discuss this with the municipality in good time. When you arrive in the Netherlands or leave the country, registration or reporting rules may also apply.
A change of address or household situation—for example, if you start living together—can affect any benefits or allowances you receive. Simply notifying the BRP is therefore not always enough. Also check with Dienst Toeslagen, UWV, SVB, or the municipality to see if you must notify them yourself of any change. Suppose you move house with your family: report the move, check the new address is registered correctly and then, for each scheme you use, check whether you need to update information or income details. This helps prevent any payments being based on old information.

Veranderingen aan de gemeente doorgeven
De Basisregistratie Personen, de BRP, bevat gegevens over mensen die in een Nederlandse gemeente staan ingeschreven. Denk aan naam, adres en gegevens over geboorte of huwelijk. De gemeente gebruikt deze registratie voor haar eigen taken en andere organisaties kunnen gegevens nodig hebben voor hun wettelijke taken. Daarom is het belangrijk dat gegevens kloppen.
Verhuis je, dan geef je je nieuwe adres door aan de gemeente volgens de regels en termijnen die voor die verhuizing gelden. Bij geboorte, huwelijk, echtscheiding of overlijden zijn andere stappen nodig. Soms geeft een ambtenaar of instantie gegevens al door, maar ga er niet zonder controle van uit dat iedere wijziging overal bekend is. Vraag de gemeente welke documenten nodig zijn en bewaar een bevestiging van je melding.
Erkenning van een kind is een juridische handeling waarmee iemand onder bepaalde voorwaarden juridisch ouder wordt. Dat is iets anders dan alleen voor het kind zorgen. De regels hangen onder meer af van de situatie van de ouders; bespreek dit tijdig met de gemeente. Ook bij aankomst in Nederland of vertrek naar het buitenland kunnen inschrijf- of meldregels gelden.
Een verandering van adres of huishouden, bijvoorbeeld doordat je gaat samenwonen, kan gevolgen hebben voor een uitkering of toeslag. De BRP-melding alleen is daarom niet altijd genoeg. Controleer ook bij Dienst Toeslagen, UWV, SVB of de gemeente welke wijziging je zelf moet doorgeven. Stel dat je met je gezin verhuist: meld de verhuizing, controleer het nieuwe adres en kijk daarna per regeling of je gegevens of inkomen opnieuw moet opgeven. Zo voorkom je dat een betaling op oude gegevens blijft gebaseerd.
