A residence permit, passport, identity card and driving licence are different documents. A residence permit concerns the right to stay in the Netherlands under certain conditions. A passport or identity card shows such things as your identity and nationality. A driving licence shows you are permitted to drive a particular type of vehicle. One document does not automatically replace another.
For a Dutch residence permit, check the correct procedure at the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND). Your purpose of stay, for instance study or joining family, will help determine which conditions apply. Sometimes, an application starts via an embassy or consulate or a sponsor in the Netherlands assists. Read which documents are needed and whether translations or legalisation are required. If in doubt, ask the IND directly what applies in your situation.
You apply for a Dutch passport or Dutch identity card at the gemeente (municipality) in the Netherlands if you have Dutch nationality. For a passport from another country, you usually contact that country, for example through its embassy. For some people, there are special travel documents, which have their own conditions. To obtain your first Dutch driving licence, apply via the gemeente after passing the required exams.
Make an appointment for the right procedure, check the costs and bring along the required evidence. Keep the confirmation of your application and check when and how you can collect the document. Use official websites: a broker or an advert does not guarantee a correct application procedure. Validity periods and requirements may change, so check the most current information before you travel or apply for something.

Een verblijfsvergunning, paspoort, identiteitskaart en rijbewijs zijn verschillende documenten. Een verblijfsvergunning gaat over het recht om onder voorwaarden in Nederland te verblijven. Een paspoort of identiteitskaart laat onder meer je identiteit en nationaliteit zien. Een rijbewijs laat zien dat je een bepaald voertuig mag besturen. Het ene document vervangt het andere dus niet vanzelf.
Voor een Nederlandse verblijfsvergunning zoek je de passende procedure bij de Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst, de IND. Het verblijfsdoel, bijvoorbeeld studie of familie, bepaalt mede welke voorwaarden gelden. Soms begint een aanvraag via een ambassade of consulaat of helpt een referent in Nederland. Lees welke documenten je nodig hebt en of vertalingen of legalisatie gevraagd worden. Vraag bij twijfel rechtstreeks aan de IND wat in jouw situatie geldt.
Een Nederlands paspoort of een Nederlandse identiteitskaart vraag je in Nederland bij de gemeente aan als je de Nederlandse nationaliteit hebt. Voor een paspoort van een ander land neem je meestal contact op met dat land, bijvoorbeeld via zijn ambassade. Voor sommige mensen bestaan aparte reisdocumenten. Ook hiervoor gelden eigen voorwaarden. Een eerste Nederlands rijbewijs vraag je na de vereiste examens bij de gemeente aan.
Maak voor de juiste procedure een afspraak, controleer de kosten en neem de gevraagde bewijsstukken mee. Bewaar een aanvraagbevestiging en controleer wanneer en hoe je het document kunt ophalen. Gebruik officiële websites: een bemiddelaar of advertentie is geen garantie dat een aanvraag goed verloopt. Geldigheidsduur en voorwaarden kunnen veranderen, dus lees de actuele informatie voordat je reist of iets aanvraagt.
