If you wish to live in the Netherlands, depending on your nationality and the reason for your stay, you are entitled to certain rights or you may need a residence permit. There are various purposes for residence, such as work, study, or joining family members. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service, known as the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst), provides information on which procedure matches your purpose for staying. Always check your own situation carefully; using someone else’s permit as an example may not be reliable in your case.
When you submit an application, you may be required to prove your identity, explain why you want to stay, and show that you meet other conditions. There are also rules and time limits if you need to extend or change your residence permit. Always make a note of when your document expires and read what the IND requires from you in good time. An IND decision can have major consequences. If you do not understand a letter, ask for trustworthy help immediately and pay close attention to the deadline for a response.
Naturalisation means applying for Dutch nationality. Usually, you start the application at the municipality (gemeente); the IND reviews your application. There are conditions relating to issues such as your current residence, official documents, and civic integration (inburgering). Exceptions to these rules may apply. When you become a Dutch national, you receive the rights and obligations belonging to this nationality. Double nationality is generally not permitted during naturalisation: sometimes, you must renounce your previous nationality. However, important exceptions exist.
Discuss your choice about nationality before submitting your application, especially if you could lose your previous nationality. The regulations of both the Netherlands and your other country may affect your decision. Always use up-to-date information from the IND, and if your situation is complicated, seek expert advice. A short explanation can help you identify the right questions to ask, but it does not determine whether your application will be approved.
