If you are employed, you will usually receive a payslip (loonstrook) with each payment. This shows how much you have earned and which amounts have been deducted. The gross wage (brutoloon) is your pay before deductions. The net wage (nettloon) is the amount usually paid into your bank account. The difference can be due to various deductions, such as wage tax and social security contributions. Also pay attention to the number of hours worked and compare your payslip to your employment contract.
At the end of each calendar year, your employer will give you an annual statement (jaaropgave). This document summarises all the amounts for the entire year, including your wages and the wage tax that was withheld. You may need the annual statement when you submit your income tax return or make a formal application. If you have had more than one employer, you will usually receive a separate annual statement from each one. Keep these statements together with your other important financial documents in a place where you can easily find them again.
Sometimes, you may not need your annual statement until several years later. For individuals, there is no general legal obligation to keep their financial records. Nevertheless, it is wise to keep your annual statements and key supporting documents for at least five years: the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Administration) may ask questions about previous years. If you receive documents digitally, make a safe copy and protect access to them.
Check your payslip or annual statement as soon as you receive it. If the name, period, hours or amounts are not correct, ask your employer to explain or correct them. Keep any explanations you receive as well. A payslip is more than just proof of payment: it helps you understand how your income is calculated and provides details you may need again in the future.
