Filing a Tax Return

Tax is money used by the government to pay for public services such as education, healthcare, roads, the police and the courts. An employee often sees on their payslip that the employer has already withheld wage tax (loonheffing). This does not always mean that your tax for the entire year is finalised. The income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) reviews information for the whole year.
Whether you must file a tax return depends on your situation and on whether you receive a message from the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax and Customs Administration). Sometimes you are required to file a return; at other times it can be sensible to check if you are entitled to a refund. Always use the official environment of the Belastingdienst. Before you start, gather your annual income statement (jaaropgave) and any other relevant documents for your situation. Carefully read through the details that have been pre-filled: you remain responsible for the information you submit.
After you file your return, the Belastingdienst calculates how much tax you owe. This is compared with what has already been withheld. As a result, you might receive a refund or have to pay an additional amount. You will be sent an assessment or another notice about this. Keep the confirmation of submission and the decision, and pay attention to the payment date or the deadline for a response.
A tax return may sometimes include terms you do not know. Ask for help at the Belastingdienst or from a trustworthy support organisation and only provide information that is necessary. Do not share your DigiD codes with anyone else. If you do not understand an assessment or think there is a mistake, contact the authorities in time. A request for clarification and a formal objection are different steps; therefore, read what is stated in the letter.
Try this
- Prepare your annual income statement and other documents.
- Check the official tax return and the deadline.

Belastingaangifte doen
