Allowances (Toeslagen) and Child Benefit (Kinderbijslag)

An allowance, or toeslag, is a contribution from the government to help with specific costs. The Dienst Toeslagen (Allowance Service) handles, among other things, health care allowance (zorgtoeslag), rent allowance (huurtoeslag), and childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag). The criteria for each type of toeslag differ: one is related to a health insurance policy, another to accommodation, and another to childcare. Child benefit, or kinderbijslag, is a separate arrangement and is administered by the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB – Social Insurance Bank). If you apply for an allowance or benefit, it does not automatically mean you are entitled to receive money.

Begin by checking the official website to see which conditions apply to your situation. To apply for a toeslag, you generally log into Mijn toeslagen (My Allowances) using your DigiD or an approved European login method. You will need to enter details such as your household size and estimated income. Usually, you must estimate your income for the year in which you want to receive the toeslag. Make this estimate as accurate as possible and save the confirmation you receive. Later, read the decision (besluit) and check the actual amount you are granted.

Allowances are often paid as an advance. This means the amount is recalculated later, using your actual details. If you earn more than you estimated, start living with a partner, or if your childcare arrangements change, you must promptly report the new information via Mijn toeslagen. If you delay, you may end up having to repay some money. After any change, review whether the new calculation matches your current situation.

For child benefit (kinderbijslag), refer to the SVB to find out how the application and payment process works in your situation. Some data is collected from other organisations, but you should always check for yourself whether you need to take any action. If you do not understand a decision or a request for repayment, ask the responsible organisation for an explanation.
