With an insurance policy, you agree with an insurer that they will pay certain damages or costs if a covered risk occurs. For this, you pay a premium. The policy describes what is and is not covered. Sometimes, an eigen risico (deductible) applies; this is the part you must pay yourself before the insurer reimburses the rest. Read these terms carefully: two insurance products with the same name can have different conditions.
A basic health insurance is, in principle, mandatory for anyone who lives or works in the Netherlands. For a motor vehicle, compulsory WA-verzekering (liability insurance for vehicles) is required to cover damage to others; additionally, there may be a vehicle tax to pay. A private liability insurance is different. This is usually voluntary and can help if you accidentally cause damage to someone else in a private situation. For a house you buy, the mortgage provider often requires a buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), but there is no general legal obligation for every homeowner to have this.
Before taking out an insurance policy, think about which risks you want to cover. Compare the premium, coverage, exclusions, and deductible. Fill in the application honestly, and read through the policy once you are accepted. Keep the policy number and the insurer’s contact details safe. Do not assume that every damage will automatically be reimbursed: the insurer will assess the claim based on what is agreed in the policy.
If damage occurs, first make sure everyone is safe and, if possible, prevent further damage. Write down what happened, take photographs, and keep receipts or other evidence. Report or claim the damage in the manner and within the timeframe the insurer asks for. If you do not understand the decision, ask for a clear explanation and check what possibility there is to respond.
Try this
- Compare coverage, exclusions, premium, and deductible before applying.
- After acceptance, keep the policy and policy number safe.
- If you suffer damage, note the date and details, take photos, and report as set out in the policy.

Verzekeren tegen risico’s
