Gross salary and net salary — supporting illustration
1.2.3

The gross salary is the wage before any amounts are deducted. An employer deducts, among other things, income tax and social security contributions and pays these to the authorities. What you usually receive in your bank account after these deductions is the net salary. The net amount is therefore lower than the gross amount in your contract.

On a payslip, you can see how the amount has been calculated. Look at the number of hours worked, the gross salary, any allowances and the deductions. Holiday allowance can also be listed; this is not always paid at the same time as your normal wage. The amount on someone else’s payslip is not a good prediction for you, because wages and rules can differ from person to person.

Check your first payslip at a new job especially carefully. Do the hours match your schedule? Is the gross salary correct according to your contract and the collective labour agreement (cao)? If an amount is not correct or you do not understand a word, ask the payroll department for an explanation. Also do this if the amount paid into your account is different from what you expected. An allowance for evening or weekend work can differ by sector. So check not only the hours, but also whether the correct allowance as agreed has been applied.

Keep your payslips and annual statements. You may need them later when making an application, for tax matters, or for discussing an error. Make your own summary of your wages and payment dates; this helps you notice more quickly if a payment is missing.
