Working for yourself begins with an idea, but it also starts with some calculations. What will you offer, who will be your customers, and what costs will you have? Your revenue is the total amount of money that customers pay you. Profit is what remains after you have paid your business expenses; you may still need to pay tax on this profit. In this way, you can see whether the business can provide you with enough income to live on.
Next, check which rules apply to your type of activity. Usually, a business must be registered with the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK), which is the Chamber of Commerce. The KvK provides information about starting out and registering a business, but does not make decisions about benefit payments. Also, find out whether your work requires a permit, insurance, or any other official approval.
If you receive a benefit, discuss your plans with the municipality or benefits agency before you start your business. Registering the business or earning an income from it can affect your entitlement to benefits, which may change or stop altogether. The consequences depend on your specific scheme and personal circumstances. Make sure you ask for a clear explanation of the agreements and get them in writing.
As an entrepreneur, you have more responsibilities than an employee. You must keep your own financial records and pay the taxes that apply to your business. You also need to arrange income in case of illness and save for your later years yourself. An occupational disability insurance (arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering) can protect part of your income if you are unable to work. You can also build up an additional pension yourself. Seek expert advice if you do not fully understand the costs and risks involved.
Try this
- Write down what you will sell and what it will cost.
- Discuss any existing benefit before you start.
- Check your KvK registration, records, and insurance.

Vraag vóór inschrijving welke regels in jouw situatie gelden.
Welke organisatie geeft startersinformatie en behandelt bedrijfsinschrijving? Toon antwoord
Toon antwoord
Een aanvullend pensioen en een arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering.
Een zelfstandige regelt zulke bescherming vaak zelf.
