Discover the Weather in the KNMI Data Explorer

The KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) has a lot of weather data. Now KNMI has a new website: the KNMI Data Explorer. Here you can easily look at the weather from the past and the present.

Everyone can use the website. You do not need to log in or download anything. You choose a weather station, a type of weather (such as temperature or rain), and a time.

The website then creates a graph for you. You can see how the weather was per hour, per day, or every 10 minutes. This is possible for all locations in the Netherlands and Caribbean Netherlands.

You can also use the Chart Builder. With it, you can combine data from different weather stations and measurements into one graph yourself. For example, you choose temperature and precipitation and see how they change together.

With the new location finder, you can quickly see which weather station is closest to your place of residence. This way, you can easily view the weather history in your region. The site is also available in English and works on your phone and tablet.

You can share a link to the graph you create with others. The most recent measurements are first checked by KNMI. That sometimes takes a little while.

The Data Explorer already shows unchecked data, accompanied by a clear warning. You can also see what happened in the past 12 hours, for example, if you are going to the beach and want to know what the weather was. KNMI wants to make it easier for everyone to use weather data.

Later in 2026 and in 2027, more features will be added, such as information about extreme weather and climate. For people who retrieve a lot of data using scripts, the old method will end at the end of 2026. They will need to switch to the KNMI Data Platform (KDP).

This platform always has the latest data. You will need an API key and sometimes must adjust your script. Examples of how this works are available on the KDP website.
