What you will learn

Social expectations can differ between groups, generations and situations. Making an appointment in advance and saying promptly when you cannot attend are useful habits. Clubs and associations can be places to meet people who share an interest. Observe and ask when you are unsure; there is no single way every person in the Netherlands behaves.

  1. 2.1Understand social customs that can differ by setting and group.
    1. 2.1.1

EnglishCustoms are not the same for everyone. They can vary by group, region, age and social situation. Notice how people around you interact and ask what is appropriate in a new situation.

    2. 2.1.2

EnglishMany people in the Netherlands say quite directly what they mean. This does not apply to everyone, so consider the person and the situation.

    3. 2.1.3

EnglishAt work and when dealing with services or public bodies, you usually make an appointment in advance. Find out how to arrange one, arrive on time and let them know promptly if you cannot come.

    4. 2.1.4

EnglishPeople may live alone, live together or have a partner of the same sex. Marriage and registered partnership are legal forms of partnership; living together without marriage is also common.

    5. 2.1.5

EnglishKnow recurring days such as Easter, King's Day, 4 and 5 May, Christmas and New Year. Sinterklaas, Carnival, Eid al-Fitr and Keti Koti are also important to some people.

  2. 2.2Build social connections through local groups and shared activities.
    1. 2.2.1

Sara wants to join a neighbourhood sports club. She sends a message and asks when she can come to watch. A volunteer invites her for Thursday at seven o’clock. Sara cannot make it then. She replies in good time and asks whether she may come on Saturday. The volunteer says that is possible. On Saturday Sara introduces herself to the group. She first listens to how the group organises the training and then asks a question.

The first two original questions check the story; the third asks about everyday life using an official source. These are not official KNM questions or complete exam preparation, and they do not predict your result.
